How do you teach your children to be Thankful?

As we come upon the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States we focus on being thankful. How do you teach your children to be thankful? I truly think it is a learned habit and does not come naturally. Looking forward to see what you have to share.

I don't know if this is something I'm even particularly good at, but that is all the better a reason to focus on teaching my kids.

We've always taught that Thanksgiving is a "religious holiday". It's not just about giving thanks, but giving thanks to God who sustains us.

I teach my children how to share by first sharing with them and others who are less fortunate than we are. I also encouragement to search for opportunities to share what they have with others. In the past, we have gone to homeless shelters on Thanksgiving to help feed the homeless.

Last year, I used our World Vision gift catalog as a jumping-off point. The catalog shows pictures of people in need all over the world, and I had each of the kids pick the gift they wanted to send those people. My son, who was 4 at the time, was astonished that people actually lived in the ramshackle hut that was shown on one of the pages. We used that to discuss how we should be thankful for all we have, and share with those who have needs.
