Modest clothing for Preteen/Teen Girls

I don't know about you all, but I'm really frustrated, angry, fill in the blank about finding modest clothes for my preteen soon to be teen daughter. I have no desire for her to look like a _________ sorry can't even type it. I have researched the internet and found either clothes that are so modest they cover from head to toe or the other way. When we go shopping we have to look really hard to find modest clothing. So, I'm turning to you for help. Do you know where to find modest clothes for girls and where do you go shopping? Can't wait to hear from you all.

I'm not sure if I have any good sources, but I would certainly be interested in what people say too. My daughter is 4 soon to be 5 a month from now, and what I'm doing even now is to make sure I buy dresses and skirts that come to her knee to establish some sort of standard now when she's young. Since most stores don't have clothing like that in her size, I get clothes that are 2 sizes bigger. It's a little loose on top, but the length is good.

I know what you mean.I have 3 girls and the oldest girl is 9 but very slim and tall tall, and tha clothes are awfull.i know someone who told me to find some patterns and pick the material and they could make them.they look store bought and what kids would consider "instyle".Maybe you have a dress shop around your area.

Lisa,

Great idea about starting standards early. Your daughter will think that is normal for her. Often I say this is the rule for our family. Anonymous, good idea about getting clothes made. I will have to think about that.

Hello everyone again. In my search on the internet I did find a website called www.mollyme.com. They have camisoles, cap sleeve shirts, and long sleeve shirts that you can wear under other shirts to make clothes more modest. They have girl sizes and adult sizes as well.

I'll be excited to see that site~ my little one is only 7 and same issues...It is hard to find clothes for them...I am one of the ones who also buy too big, and then dart the waist to make them fit. I was so relieved this year when the "long shorts" bermuta shorts came into style this season!!

I have a 10 & 14 yr old and know how hard it is to find modest clothes also! My oldest doesn't even like to go clothes shopping, and when we do, we too buy larger sizes to cover tummies and other parts of our bodies we don't want showing!
I wish they would make clothes again like they used too; not so fitting and showing so much! Unfortunately I am not a seamstress or do I have time to sew. What happened to the good ol days??

I'm not a seamstress either and that is a real problem. I to have been buying larger sizes to cover tummies. The whole issue can be very exhausting.

Well Ladies~ We just went school shopping and you won't believe the size Tshirt I had to buy for my 7yr old to make it fit like a regular Tshirt! (16-18) Yep! What is going on with these sizes??....it is just a hair too big thru the shoulders, but it looks alot better than being too tight~ I couldn't find a 12-14 but she really liked the ponies on the front and the size that should have fit looked like it was for a toddler! eek~ just thougth I would share this sillyness!! =o)
Hope you are all having a good day!

Hi Jenlon,

Amazing, but very believable. My husband encouraged me to buy a few things online for my daughter. I told him you never know what size she is. She can be a large in girls, medium in juniors, small in adult. Sizes mean very little. Thanks for sharing. Helps to normalize my feelings about the whole shopping mess.

Hi ,

When my daughter was a preteen a few years ago, the styles were even more skimpy with the thongs hanging out of jeans. How we dealt with low rise pants and short shirts was lots of layering pieces. Also buying in the Misses dept not juniors leads to less skin. Many stores now offer several options for rise on pants like Penneys or Kohl's. It is great that the long shirts are coming back and camis with long tails and lace. Jackets for teens also helped with modesty. Start young and read online descriptions before instore shopping helps to know what your looking for.

Vicki,

Good idea about skipping the juniors department. I had heard someone else mention that as well. I do like the camis and long shirts.

Even the "secular" press is aware of this problem. You might want to read this article. Not necessarily a Christian article, but expresses some of the things we have been discussing.

Hi ladies,

Just wanted to invite you to visit my online boutique-- which was started to address this very issue. A mom visited this week and thanked me for offering clothes that "cover what they should without making you look like a homely old maid." See what you think!

I'm a homeschooling mom who has used www.hannaandersson.com for years. The clothing isn't cheap but lasts forever and is beautiful as well as modest. After over 7 years of buying her clothing on-line I am now at a crossroads as she is a teenager and we are facing this problem again.

I have found crista-taylor.com,modestapparelusa.com, and modestbydesign.com.

Search on the internet. More and more things are popping up! Good luck!

I can totally relate to you. I want my daughter to dress appropriate, but I still want her to like what she is wearing. This is the place I like the most apparel.

Hi Kimberly, my name is Katie and I'm 13. I just started wearing modest clothing (mostly skirts) this year, so my mom and I have been looking for modest clothing. We've found that Ross often has good clothing for good prices that are usually discounted. For instance, today my mom bought me 2 long (and cute!) skirts and 2 cute tops for a total of $44. Most of my skirts are from Ross and I love each of them very much! I hope this helps you!

My daughter is 12 and very slender. She is hard to buy for because she does not want anything above the knee or cut too low in front. she is growing so fast that now she needs size 16 slim. I have some of her very modest clothes on Ebay right now. My nick there is catniip and I am on yahoo000 as well.
